Obesity is a condition where excess fat accumulates in the body which has very bad effects on health. Obesity is more common in women than in men. Divide one’s weight in kg with height in meters, again divide the answer by one’s height in meters. If the answer is above 25, one is overweight and if above 30, one is considered obese. Obesity can result in several other health issues like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver, osteo arthritis, sleep apnoea and other conditions which may lead to death. In women it is one of the main reasons for PCOD and infertility. Over eating, consumption of high caloric diet, lack of exercise and genetic factors are the main reason for obesity.

Ayurveda explain obesity as STHOULYA. The main reasons are over eating, eating of high caloric diet, consumption of unwholesome food, over eating, untimely eating, less physical activities, sleeping at day time etc. Due to the above factors, the quality of digestive and metabolic fire (agni) becomes impaired leading to abnormalities in fat metabolism. This ends up in obesity. Genetically, a person with KAPHA nature (prakriti), will always be on the plumper side and also has the tendency to gain weight and become obese.

The correction in the basic metabolic activities (agni) through a specially and individually designed Panchakarma is the line of approach in ayurveda for the effective and sustainable management of obesity. During the treatment the person will definitely lose a little bit of weight. But, post treatment, with proper medicines, modifications and self-discipline in diet and lifestyle, more weight loss will happen as there is a continuous improvement in metabolism. The therapies will also help in overall improvement of general health, removal of unwanted metabolic waste from the system, improvement in circulation all over the body, reinforcement of core structures supporting the joints and low back, slowing down of degenerative changes in the body and so on. The treatment also will have an indirect impact on prevention of other conditions that can happen due to obesity.

Herbal powder massage (Udwarthanam) , wet herbal powder massage (Uthsadanam), herbal decoction pouring all over the body ( Dhanyamla dhara), Dhanyamla kizhi ( Massage with poultice made of herbal powder dipped in warm herbal decoction), Abhyangam (Therapeutic oil massage with specific medicated oil), Podikizhi ( Massage all over the body with poultice made of herbal powder dipped in warm medicated oil, Steam bath, Pizhichil ( Therapeutic oil massage and pouring of stream of specific medicated oil all over the body)are the external therapies done. Virechana (Purgation induced by herbal preparation) are the major Panchakarma procedure done in the management of obesity. There will be regular internal medications during the treatment and as a follow-up,a prescription of internal medicines for a period of 3 months should be followed for very good results.
