This is a condition where a group of diseases are seen in a single person. When three among the five, abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, are seen in a person, he is termed as a person suffering from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a critical reason and major disposing factor for heart attacks and brain stroke.

Hereditary, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, lack ofexercise and stress are the reasons for developing metabolic syndrome.

The statement of “Prevention is better than cure” is extremely valid in this case. Healthy eating habits, regular exercise, remaining active and reasonable management of stress can prevent develop metabolic syndrome.

Any person who notices abdominal obesity, increase in weight, stress, irregular sleeping and unhealthy food habits, inactivity and having family history of any of these conditions can end up in metabolic syndrome. Such susceptible people should plan a comprehensiveAyurvedic treatment every year to cleanse the system and correct the metabolism to prevent the condition developing into complications. If they are already suffering, the treatment will not only help in effective management with minimum allopathic medicines, but also prevent the condition deteriorating to other serious health issues.

A two weeks tailor made Panchakarma program, once a year will be beneficial. The program can be divided into two types. One is preventive and the other is to manage the complicationsof the body. The external therapies and internal medications are different in both cases. The choice of internal medicines is to improve the quality of digestive-metabolic fire (agni) and to burn the extra fat in the body. Herbal powder massage (udvarthanam), wet herbal powder massage (udsadanam), massage with poultice made of herbal powder dipped in warm herbal decoction (podi kizhi), therapeutic oil massage with specific herbal oil, steam bath, , massage with poultice made of herbal leaves dipped in warm medicated oil (ela kizhi), Inducing purgation (virechanam) with specific herbal formulation, medicated oil bath, pouring of stream of medicated oil continuously on fore head (siro dhara) are the procedures usually done in the preventive aspect.
