Quality of medicines plays a vital role in the effectiveness of treatments. In Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre, we prescribe and use medicines manufactured by our own parent company, Nagarjuna Herbal Concentrates Ltd (NHCL). NHCL manufactures more than 500 traditional formulations and 50 proprietary medicines, sold across India and exported to around 40 countries worldwide. Medicines are manufactured in a modernized GMP certified, ISO 9001-2015 certified plant. The art of tradition is combined with modern technology to manufacture and make our products unique and superior with high quality standards.

NHCL has a well-developed R&D set up including an animal experiment unit. This ensures the quality and standards, right from the raw material procurement, manufacturing process till the finished product (Medicine). The R&D has different departments like Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Pharmaceutics. Clinical research to perform various testing to ensure the quality and standards of the raw material, manufacturing process, finished medicines and their toxicity is conducted here. The R&D of Nagarjuna is awarded and accredited by various agencies. It is the first ISO certified R&D in the state of Kerala. Nagarjuna R&D is approved by the department of Scientific and Industrial research (DSIR), Government of India. It is the only set up with animal testing facility in the Kerala Ayurveda industry approved by the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, Govt. of India. The R&D facility is also approved by the Department of AYUSH, Govt. of India, for testing crude drugs and finished products.

The proprietary and speciality medicines are developed by NHCL R&D. After its formulation, it is tested in animals to study for its dosage, toxicity and efficacy, followed by a clinical study in humans to establish its efficacy before it comes out into the market. Nagarjuna has thus developed a wide range of speciality medicines, indicated in the treatment of Rheumatism, Spine disorders, Soft tissue rheumatism, Neuro muscular conditions, male infertility, to name a few.

All raw materials and finished products are tested by different methods to ensure their quality and standard. Testing for the moisture content, percentage of volatile oil, Total ash and acid insoluble to understand how much is the effective medicinal content in the raw material. Microbiology study to detect presence of microbes, microscopic evaluation, water soluble extract study and Thin Layer Chromatographic (TLC) study are some of the standard parameters followed to ensure the standards of the raw materials and finished products.

The medicine standardization process starts from the raw material collection. Samples are collected from Govt. approved and licensed source. The thus procured raw materials are subjected to TLC and compared with the standard TLC of our approved specimen to avoid adulteration. Apart from that, the macroscopic and microscopic tests are also conducted before the raw material is approved. The stored materials, are periodically checked for all its parameters ensuring quality. All traditional medicines are manufactured based on classical texts and the Indian Pharmacopeia, approved by the Govt. of India while all products are licensed by the Kerala State Drug Control Department.

Every batch of the processed and finished medicines go through strict Quality Control (QC) for quality test. This includes organoleptic parameters like colour, taste and smell, laboratory parameters like TLC of medicines and percentage of volatile oil. Many studies like total ash, acid insoluble ash, acid soluble extract, water soluble extract, microscopic and microbiology are the common ones carried out on finished medicines to ensure the quality and standards. The assessment of phytochemicals helps to establish the active contents.

Medicine manufacturing processes with standard raw materials, standard particle size, standard shelf life etc will increase the efficacy of the medicines, eventually helping in better, faster healing, relief and recovery during treatment.

Major advancements like conversion of liquid Kashayam to Kashayam tablets, Ghrutham and Thailams to soft gelatine capsules, oil to liniments etc. make administration of medicine more convenient and palatable. By the specific manufacturing process, traditional bitter and liquid form of medicines are converted to more palatable forms without them losing their efficacy.
